Phuket Philatelic Museum

From my recent visit of the smaller and sometimes overlooked places of Interest in Old Town Phuket
As an ex Royal Mail postwoman from around 2011, I a always interested now in not only the architecture, but the history of any given countries
postal system. After all it was one of the first methods of communication between different communities.

Phuket Town has one that might interest you. The Phuket Philatelic Museum is located in an old district of Phuket Town in a building from the year 1920.

Once inside the so-called Post Museum, you can see the same machines and layout of the office as it was nearly a century ago. There are old stamp and packing machines, and even telephones displayed as they were a century ago. There are post boxes for in-house mail and mailboxes for homes, mail scales, and some of the stamp metering equipment is still there. You can see some of the old stamps they used in the early part of the twentieth century. If inclined, there are stamps available for purchase as souvenirs of the old Phuket Post Museum (or Philatelic Museum).

The Phuket Post Museum is located an 80-year-old building on Montri Road (the original signage still adorns the old Sino-Portuguese style building which was built in 1930, saved from demolition in the 1990’s and then opened as a museum in late 2004) close to the main Phuket Post Office in Phuket Town, on the east side of Phuket Island, and is open during regular weekday business hours starting at 9 am.

Replacing the Focusing Screen on My Canon 70D

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 23, 2020
Posted in: Accessories. Leave a comment

Why would I want to do this ? I hear you ask, well after five years of hard graft with this camera and trying in the last three years to clean the dust and rubbish that accumulates out of it. Not necessarily the right way. I found I had made little scratches that were even more annoying than the original dust and hairs that seem to find their way into this very, apparently, tightly sealed area!

Next Question? Why so long before doing this? well for a long time Canon have been saying that if you do anything to your camera in invalidates their warranty. Secondly that you couldn’t change the focusing screen on a Canon 70D, and that really didn’t make sense as had I sent it to Canon for changing, they could do it!

So as I do from time to time, I look on the internet and see if anyone has found a way to do this themselves. Imagine my delight when I saw a video on You Tube of a Canon 70d Focus screen being changed, step by step.  By a guy called JS. Not that hard is it?

Well before you even think about embarking on this type of activity there is something you need to think about. The quality of what you are putting back into your camera.

So I trawled the internet again and found DHcamera an American camera spares and repairs company selling spares. Great and they would post to the UK! Even better, because although I am currently living in Thailand it is still easier for me to get things sent via the UK.

So via the UK , Via my Daughter, this arrived today. It took bout two weeks t arrive in the UK and then another 7 days to get to me.

So armed with my blower, my small screwdriver set, rubber gloves, tweezers and spot lamp, i started the process of dismantling the inside front of my 70D. As per video. Just so you know, I watched the video several times until I was happy with what order i was to dismantle and reassemble in. I still had my laptop on standby , video poised at any point to help if i got stuck.

All went very smoothly and about half an hour later, although it felt like longer, I had a nice new shiny, blemish free focusing screen back in my viewfinder, and oh what a joy! No annoying little bits of dust and debris, and definitely no Scratches!

This is the Screen…….Tiny focus screen

and the little plastic tool is for clasping the little protruding leg to handle it by so you don’t damage it again on the way in!Clamp tool

Abandoned Villa- Old Town Phuket

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 23, 2020

So another in my Urban exploration series, this time the abandoned Villa, in Old Town Phuket.
Built around 100 years ago this sadly empty and decaying building is left. Surrounded by some out buildings and what would have been servants quarters.
The building is securely padlocked at all entrances to the ground floor, I suspect that as much of the main roof section has gone the upper floors maybe rotten beyond repair and very dangerous!
Windows are closed and I managed to push one open a little to get a peek inside. Tantalising glimpses of what was before. You can get around to the side and the rear of this building, the back, backs onto a water culvert so not practical to enter through there either. Judging by the undergrowth, i wouldn’t want to bet on the local friendly snakes either.
So instead I just looked at what I could and wishing I could restore it to what it used to be. On a prime piece of land in the center of the Old Town in Phuket, it looks like there will be a long wait before that if ever comes up for sale!
This location is open and public;

Camera Insert Bag Protect Package Case Partition Padded for DSLR-Review

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 22, 2020

Great camera kit insert liner.

Good quality material, well padded and more than enough partitions.Strong Velcro fasteners for the lid which are fully adjustable!as are the dividers.

This bag liner takes as shown below in the photos; Canon 70D with Tamron 10-24mm attached Canon 18-135mm STM Canon 55-250mm STM Plus room for the end cap and some lightweight cables/remote set/spare battery Great value for money!

I have been using this now for sine March 2019, and I have not regretted getting it one bit. It fits very snugly(almost too much so) into my Osprey Back pack, but better into my Swiss gear Shoulder bag so much better. Great for managing not to crack your camera and lenses together when out shooting, and very quick and easy access through the top Velcro, material lid.

I must admit it has been one of the most useful for my money items/accessories I have bought for my camera kit. And still shows no signs of wear or breaking The Velcro tags are still as annoyingly sticky as the day I got it!

With The 70D, 18-135, and 55-250mm stm
With The 70D, 18-135, and 55-250mm stm

With The 70D, 18-135, and 55-250mm stm

Cost from 5-10 GBP a bargain for what it does. So for day pack users I can’t recommend this enough.

Step Up Rings- Quick Review

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 22, 2020
Posted in: Accessories. Leave a comment

Step Up rings? some of you maybe asking.. if you know then you can just go to the section on what I thought of this set I bought.

If you don’t then stay with me here….

Right if you have done any kind of Photography you will have heard people say they are using filter/filters. Now these come in two types, screw on your lens type and slide into a holder attached to your lens type. For step up rings we are only talking about the screw on types of filter you might want to put on front of one of your lenses

Now filters come in different types and sizes, for example a UV filter will come in sizes to fit most standard lenses. e.g. 49mm, 67mm, and 77mm and even 84mm. Now this is great as most people put on a UV filter and it never comes off! they are cheap and easy to get from all sorts of manufacturers. But the more specialised ones like ND filters, well read on.

Lets say you want a Circular Polarising filter, to create some dramatic skies, or a Neutral density filter to create some smooth silky water effect or stretched clouds effects to create a sense of movement.
well you would need a fairly decent sized filter to cover your widest lens(landscape)

Most landscape photographers have an ultra wide lens, usually starting from 10mm and finishing anywhere between 18,20, 22, and 24mm. Distance and these lenses diameter is usually somewhere between 72mm and 84mm depending on which lens you have. so you have to buy a filter that will match this diameter of lens, right? Right, but what if you want to use it on a smaller lens you own, say your 18-55mm kit lens, well that is where a step up ring comes into play. So you don’t get any unsightly circular vignetting you can buy a step up ring which attaches to the front smaller diameter lens but the front fits your larger ND filter (77mm) .

Like this….

This is a 49mm-77mm step up ring
This is a 49mm-77mm step up ring
This is the ring with no filter but attached to the 49mm lens
This is the ring with no filter but attached to the 49mm lens
This is the step up ring attached to the 49mm lens with the 77mm filter instu
This is the step up ring attached to the 49mm lens with the 77mm filter instu

So now, I can use my ND filter, not just on my ultra wide angle lens, but on any of my lenses as I bought one for my Canon M 15-45mm kit lens which is tiny, my Canon 18-135mm stm which is 67mm, and my Canon 55-250mm stm zoom lens which is 58mm. These sizes are what is referred to as the Filter size.

So instead of having to shell out for each and every lens I own, so long as I buy a 77mm filter(any type, ie. UV, CPL, ND) I can fit the one to any of my lenses. This also means I can afford to buy a really good version of one instead of cheap versions of the many sizes.

So I bought a set of metal screw on, thin, step up rings. Quite a few of the cheap manufacturers will do whole sets of sizes either up or down, I decided that I didn’t need that many and just got the three I needed for the three lenses I have. These don’t cost more than anything from £1-3. So don’t need to pay out more. I got mine from Lazada here in Thailand, but I would have got them or even Amazon.co.uk

Fruits de Mer

One of the things about living on an Island is that your diet options expand to fresh fish!

I finally got to visiting one of my local food/morning markets and what a treat, not only the usual fruit/veg/meat but a fabulous array of shellfish and fish.

Fresh from the mornings fisherman. There are a few of these in Phuket, this is not a tourist market but a real working market for local people in Chalong.

A great place to see what there is …..

Friendship Beach street Art Gallery

You know sometimes Street Art appears in places you least expect it! Like this building on Friendship Beach near Rawai, in Phuket. Or maybe not, maybe its the perfect location for artists to express their feelings of being there.
Either way I have here a collection of very talented artists, and where at all possible i have credited their work. I do a lot of research but as with all of this kind of visual art it is not always possible to find out everything about the piece or the artists. A large part of this collection is from the local Artist Amann based here in Phuket. I find a fair few pieces of his work spread around the Phuket Area.
I hope you enjoy

Canon 15-45mm stm Lens

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 12, 2020
Posted in: Lenses. 2 Comments

So finally I bit the bullet and finally got myself a native lens for my Canon M. After having just got it and realising that I had a viltrox adaptor to use my Ef-s Lenses with(still very good), I wanted something a bit more compact and throw in my bag, after all the whole idea is to have a smaller DSLR quality camera.

A couple of things helped the decision outside of size,  the cost and the opportunity and the practicality.

The Cost; this is driven by the fact that i have little or next to no income, so everything is done on a strict budget. Now although the UK 2nd hand market is still holding it’s own, here in Thailand the 2nd hand market is plummeting. Primarily due to two things. One the Thais love all things brand spanking new! 2nd they don’t like used goods so won’t pay the prices we pay in the UK for them. So for the princely sum of £47 I got this unused kit lens which had never been on a camera , all within budget.

I also wanted a wide angle as I could afford and apart from the Canon 11-22mm stm ef-m this is the only ultra wide lens they do! I know that there is an 18-55mm stm ef-m and this too has good reviews for sharpness, but the 15mm just pipped it for me for the landscape, architecture and street photography i do.

So far and a few months on, I have no regrets, i love it, from it’s super lightweight to its very useful range of 15-45mm. It has produced amazing results and the only draw back….its not wide enough. Thats when i get my Viltrox adaptor out and clamp on my Tamron 10-24mm.

All the images in the gallery below were taken with the Canon Eos M and the 15-45mm EF-M lens.

Canon Eos M Screen Shade

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 12, 2020
Posted in: Accessories, Cameras. Leave a comment

So one of the things you will find with the Canon Eos M is that it has no viewfinder. Now this is not a total deal breaker. I have found that I certainly prefer the stability whilst shooting of the viewfinder on my 70D, but I also like the instant results you get from making adjustments to your image from the live view screen.

Now some of you may know that I have been living in a very Sunny country for the last five years! that creates all sorts of problems for the Eos M and me and reflective and near non existent ability to see the screen.

So i got this fantastic bit of kit, easy as 1,2,3 to put on. weighs nothing at all so doesn’t affect my lightweight canon eos m camera. shade is perfect for bright sunny weather shooting. i can see the screen perfectly now. nice easy quick opener and closing. handy slide off mechanism if you want to take the shade off. fabbo  I put pics 1-6 to show from the packet to fixed on the camera.

Now I have found this invaluable in strong bright light, but the only draw back is that when the bright light(sun) is behind you it once again becomes difficult to see the screen, not as difficult as without a screen at all, but still difficult. So I am also considering getting one of these Loupes. These are as near as you will get to a viewfinder for mirrorless cameras. Although without all the information you would normally get on a viewfinder and not electronically attached to your camera like the ones you can get for more recent Canon mirrorless cameras, this will have to do! When I get it I will give an update on how it works! or not!

Canon M and real World Use

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 12, 2020
Posted in: Cameras, Canon Eos M. 1 Comment

Got my beautiful M now and using the Viltrox adaptor works perfectly well with my EF-s lenses for now. I went out yesterday and did an architectural old city walkabout, as I call them to put it through it’s paces. Wow! what a little powerhouse?

I loved the small form, and actually find myself putting the wrist strap on my wrist and then carrying the whole thing from the lens. Less pressure on the joint between the camera and lens, and so much lighter in the hand!

Only just had a chance to open up my pics and have a look, and apart from me getting used to having 100% filed of view (as opposed to 98% on 70d), and battling with the sunshine(need to get a shade to go on back), I am really impressed with the IQ on this. Battery life came in at 370 shots before showing red and flashing at me, that was with me turning off auto focus in between shots and turning the camera off between shots.

Think i will need to get a spare battery too!

For those that are interested I also have just installed ML on it today (without ANY Issues) , more to find out the shutter count, about 3,400 still images and 5k in movie, so very pleased with that and for me the intervalometer are a great addition. It really is in mint condition.

Will post pics in the next few days or so as I will be out this week working more with it.

I have to say it is seriously making me look at the rest of the M range and possibly considering giving up the 70D!

Peaceful Moments from Karon Beach – Phuket

Posted by Annette Johnson on January 11, 2020

So as part of my ongoing self managing therapy, I photograph, a lot, and I have a lot of images from that. Some i make into what I hope are useful , “this is a nice place to visit and this is what you will see” slideshows on YouTube.

Then there are these, peaceful moments which I post for people who like me have worked out that we all need 5 minutes of the day just to stop and think of nothing else in this world, but  to stop! and give our minds just a break at least once a day from all the things that push us too hard, Life! I weave them into these peaceful moments using images and appropriate music to help the mind switch off from the rest of the World.

I hope you find them as helpful as I do….
