Altyn Arashan valley- Kyrgyzstan 2012

Posted by Annette Johnson on August 23, 2019
Posted in: Kyrgyzstan. Tagged: Kyrgyzstan. Leave a comment

With 90% of the country land above 1500m in elevation, Kyrgyzstan has some amazing valleys. Altyn Arashan is one of the most famous ones for its dreamy landscape and hot springs.

It is even more enjoyable that it is not so easy to reach it! During 2012 during my journey across Central Asia and following the Silk route to China, I spent two months in Kyrgyzstan.

This trip to the hot springs was a trip I shall never forget in the beaten up but bullet proof UAZ 452 (Commercial) Part minivan, a throwback to times long gone when things were made to last. The beginning of the road looked smooth but as you can see (although pictures cannot really show it), it quickly became rocky and bumpy, and sometimes unbelievably accessible!

Many times we crossed animal groups that were being moved to higher grass fields for the summer. Other old soviet vehicles, and horse riders, it is a great place if you want to get around on a horse, hacking is one of the popular activities there.

We went for the hot springs and they were worth every minute, we had one to ourselves and your hut will be next to the river(well not far), a concrete pool will have all the perfectly clear, clean hot spring water you need. Afterwards we had a perfect picnic nearby and then the return teeth juddering journey back! I hope you like my slideshow if so please subscribe, I am always working on new ones from my actually visited destinations.

Da Nang museum of cham culture- Da nang- Vietnam 2019

Posted by Annette Johnson on July 5, 2019
Posted in: Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Leave a comment

The first structure in what is now the Đà Nẵng Museum of Cham Sculpture was built in 1915.

However, many of the Cham sculptures here were actually collected over the 20 years prior to the construction of this first building. Coming from sites around Đà Nẵng and Quảng Nam Province, they were brought to this site and displayed in what was then known as “The Garden of Tourane”.

The collection of Cham sculpture was begun by French archaeologists and experts from L’École Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO). Some artifacts were sent to museums in Paris and others to museums in Hà Nội and Sài Gòn (now Hồ Chí Minh City). However, the most typical and precious objects were left here in what was then known as Tourane (now Đà Nẵng).

Làng Bích họa Đà Nẵng Da Nang Fresco Village

I have just come back from Danang in Vietnam this April 2019, One of the things I look for as a photographer is the unusual and artistic areas of anywhere I am visiting.

Here in the heart of Danang is a community project to combine sustainable tourism and turn degraded houses into desirable homes for the local people.

The project has commissioned more than 30 mural paintings, with the theme being; Culture, beauty and nature and the people of Danang.

The project was started in early 2018 and is expected to expand to other localities across the country by 2019.

Tan Thanh fishing village being the other better known project, which i also visited and will be posting the video of shortly!

If I was asked which was my favourite, i would be hard to choose, but I think the butterflies and the simple images of children playing traditional games that are painting on the school wall.

Wat Bang Kung Samut Prakhen

Posted by Annette Johnson on July 5, 2019
Posted in: Thailand South. Leave a comment

There are a lot of Buddhist temples in Thailand and there are a few unique and interesting ones – the Wat Bang Kung วัดบางกุ้ง is one of them. It is actually a temple built within a huge banyan tree! Wat Bang Kung is located in Amphawa district, Samut Songkhram.

Within the Wat entwined tree, there is a large Buddha statue pasted with gold leaves by devout visitors who will walk around the Buddha It appears that a concrete structure had been built within the tree to house the temple.

Within the grounds from Wat Bang Kung lies the memorial to Bang Kung Camp, once a strategic naval outpost. Back in 1767, after the defeat of old Siam capital of Ayutthaya by Burmese forces, general Taksin took his navy down to this area after Burmese ships blocked the route to the gulf. It was from here that Taksin led his troops to take back Ayutthaya from the Burmese and eventually becoming King of Siam.

Besides statues of soldiers dressed in 18th century military wear, there are dozens of life-size statues of Muay Thai kick-boxers displaying different Muay Thai moves, which were added in the late 20th century.

Heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu

The Statue of the Heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu
Danang-Vietnam

The Largest statue I have seen to any mother anywhere in my travels.
I arrived here at about 12 noon so the sun was right on top of me, it was unbearably hot, but I wanted to do this woman justice with the light and the one colour granite that she is carved from.

A great monument not just to this hero mother of the communist regime in Vietnam, but to all Mothers of the World, being here gave me a great sense of being a “Mother” and the size and grandeur is fitting to us all. Interestingly inaugurated on March 24th 2015, being my birthday day!

I found it a very calm and restful place to be, huge gardens covering some 15 hectares in Cam Mountain, sadly it was so hot when I visited that I could only manage a small part of this great monument.

Costing a little over VND 410 billion (US$19 million) contributed by local authorities and beneficiaries from inside and outside the country. Inside the actual sculpture is housed a museum honouring the lives and contributions of 50,000 Vietnamese heroic mothers nationwide.

As you approach it from the massive roadside car drop off, you will be met first by it eight pillars sculpted with images of heroic mothers from across Vietnam as well as young volunteers who fought and died in the Truong Son Mountains. houses inside a museum honouring the lives and contributions of 50,000 Vietnamese heroic mothers nationwide. This is followed by four plateaus of steps, with a smooth path running alongside for those unable to manage the very easy steps

Cao Dai Temple Danang

Posted by Annette Johnson on July 5, 2019
Posted in: Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Leave a comment

From my recent visit to this Cao Dai Temple in downtown Danang in Vietnam, a great place to find sanctuary for the hustle and bustle of the City around it.

Here you will find the concept of a “One World Religion” and I really liked that and the layout and un-fussiness of the whole building.

Founded in Vietnam in the early 1920s, Cao Dai is based on the main religions of the East and West and takes as its saints characters from different cultures, such as Joan of Arc, Victor Hugo, Shakespeare and Lenin. Today the religion has approximately 1.5 million followers. The temple in Da Nang, the second largest in the country, houses representations of the Divine Eye, the emblem of the doctrine, as well as the founders of Islam, Christianity, Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism.

Caodaists believe that all religions are ultimately the same and seek to promote tolerance throughout the world.

Worshippers at the Cao Dai Temple strive for world peace and harmony with beliefs steeped in a number of world religions. Followers must obey the five virtues of Confucianism – humanity, obligation, civility, knowledge and reliability and have belief in the Buddhist principles of rebirth and karma.

Watching Caodaists pray is one of the major highlights when visiting the temple as they dress in long flowing robes of white for lay followers, yellow, blue or red for priests whilst bishops have the Divine Eye embroidered on their headpieces. During worship, men are seated on the right and women on the left with all devotees seated in orderly rows. The building is a combination of Neo-Gothic, Baroque and Oriental design and is very ornately decorated including dragon wrapped pillars, seven-headed cobras and ceilings of sky blue.

Tam Thanh Mural Village-Vietnam 2019

Posted by Annette Johnson on July 5, 2019
Posted in: Socialist Republic of Vietnam. 4 Comments

April 2019 I stayed in Danang and had heard about this wonderful Art decorated Village with it’s famous murals.

One of several Art villages to be seen in Vietnam. I nearly didn’t get here because it is about an hours drive from Danang on the road to Hoi An .

As luck would have it, i got a good price and went and don’t regret it for a minute, I was rewarded with some of the most talented street art/Murals I have seen and very friendly people.

As I did this trip independently I was not crowded by the “our buses ” that come in from Hoi An around lunchtime, so had the whole place practically to myself.

This gave me time to explore every nook and soi(tiny alleys) and get some of the not so frequently seen murals.

Tam Than is a fishing village still and there are still fishermen , there boats lined up on the unbroken shoreline.

A wonderful place to go….Tell me which is your favourite in the comments

Camera Picture Profiles For Canon

Posted by Annette Johnson on June 28, 2019
Posted in: Creative Camera Info. Leave a comment

Camera Picture Profiles

what are they? Why would you use them? What do they do for you as a photographer or videographer?

So I have been exploring my Canon 70D more in depth and looking at some of the functions outside of my normal photography taking actions. I felt that other cameras might perhaps appear to have bigger, brighter, clearer images than those I was getting from my 70D. So instead of getting a new camera, i decided to see what my current camera could do.

I have been exploring long exposures with and without filters (another post to come later), and the last couple of days I have been investigating the Picture profile settings on my camera.
These are found (and I will speak from my camera the 70D) in the back display menu from the main menu.

Now all cameras(DSLR’s and mirrorless, as far as I know ) regards of make or marque will come with a number of factory optional Picture profiles (to be called CPP’s from now on).

These will be, but not limited to, Auto, Standard,Portrait,Landscape,Neutral,Faithful,Monochrome, and the 70d has three user def.1,2,3. Now these can be set manually by adjusting the settings given when opened, or you can transfer from downloads to PC to Camera via USB (I will go through this procedure later).

Now I am no Technobob, and I didn’t have a clue where to start with this, I knew for example that I wanted to sharpen my images and contrast them and …..Well you get it, but the thought of having a setting/s that I can just flick on my camera and it’s all there without wasting time fiddling with the sliders was just too much for me. So I started looking on the internet for some help.

So now I think you may have grasped what they are? I guess you might ask why you would use them. Well as I said just before, to improve the picture IQ or  I like to experiment, create, give a different mood, or just improve on the basics that the camera can offer me. They are a very effective tool within your camera. There is also a good body of people who say that it also reduces your post production time in front of a PC or other electronic device of choice. Reducing the time spent making adjustments is my no.1 priority. That’s got to be a good thing right?

Videographers use them extensively to create real film feel video, or to add something more t the raw video that comes straight from the camera manufacturer’s settings. And why not? that’s why we all take photographs and video, to give the viewer a new perspective on what they are looking at.

CPP’s, as I mentioned before, you can make your own, and this is fun, but I wanted to know before I started creating what sort of settings give which different looks to images. The best way to do that is to have a look at some, what I call ready-made CPP’s. They are available on the internet.
One photographer that caught my eye (not just a videographer) is Kevin Wang . He has created around 20 CPP’s that are more than just experiments of marginal changes in the final image.

Canon themselves, of course do produce some extra profiles to compliment the ones you already have and they do have full instructions and help on downloading and installing them on your camera, it helps if you already have the most up-to date DPP already, but again you can download for free from the Canon web site.

Whilst investigating the profiles already available I also found 69 Canon picture styles , plus a selection from Marvels film collection, giving you a nice cine look to some of your videos or images. They also walk you through the download and install process and explain what all the different profiles do for each shot.

I have produced a “small” selection from Kevin Wang to give you some idea on how Camera picture profiles can change the “feel” of your image in stills photography. If you click on the images below it will  enlarge it will give you a full screen viewer and you will be able to identify each CPP!

So I used a coke tin, the subject being coloured and having clean defined lines and I maintained the light in the room at the same level throughout the process of taking the images (nothing to scientific). All the images were taken with the same basic settings except the Camera profile, a time consuming job, especially as you realise that I did three different catalogues of Camera profiles so I could see and choose the best ones that suited my desire. Approx. 250+ profiles. Don’t forget these are straight out of camera and converted to JPG for the web. Nothing else done to the image when I imported them to Lr5.7.

The other thing I learnt very quickly was the adjustments inside the profile,see pic below;
Each Camera profile will have it’s own set of different levels of Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation, and Colour tone. Whilst I was in the process of loading them into my camera via the Canon software as directed by Canon, i could clearly see the difference in the images certain levels would make to an image, a quick learning curve. Still nice not to have to make all the adjustments myself , as it’s already been done. What no one seems to have done is a comprehensive photo catalogue like the example above. You will find bits here and there, but when I was faced with 169 profiles in one catalogue I decided that it would be better to view them in picture format!

So they are done, well the pictures anyway, I just now have to name the files to the profiles, trouble is I can see where people don’ t bother, as once you have found a set of profiles you like to work with then you leave the rest. A job for a rainy day I think.

So I hope you have enjoyed this quick look at Camera Profiles and don’t forget you can create your own once you have had a play with the levels, or even use a pre set one as a starting point and then tweak it for an image you are looking for.

I am currently trying them out to get the exact set of three that I am happy to have in camera 99% of the time for those needed occasions.

I hope you try this out and even maybe share some of your images with profiles you have tried!

Andoer Mini Tabletop Tripod

Posted by Annette Johnson on June 18, 2019
Posted in: Accessories. Leave a comment

So this a  a new addition to my kit bag. The Andoer “table top” tripod, actually not so tiny, and fully extending legs, giving it some decent height. Looks and adjusts just like it’s more expensive option the Manfrotto version, which comes in at four times the price of this one. As far as I can see the quality is the same, so why spend more?

It comes with a 1/4″ mounting screw for DSLR and mirrorless cameras. A nice touch would have been a cheap cloth drawstring bag to put it in, but hey at this price I am in no way complaining.

It also doubles up I am told as a good DSLR selfie handle for vlogging.

Though only two settings, high or low! It’s very light and the bonus was it comes with a ball head mount for your camera, making it ideal for any angle photography.

I already have a rather heavyweight Jessops adjustable ball head mount for my monopod, but it is so heavy i find myself not taking it out with me, due to it’s weight.
The ball head and tripod are made from very Lightweight, durable and solid ABS plastic, this makes it strong and light. and fully detaches from the tripod head itself, making it very compact to travel with in the bag.

Many of the table top tripods I looked at had ridiculous weight limits, like only takes “Compact system cameras” or  no more than a Kilo. Well the great thing about it is it takes a whole 2 kilo (4.4lbs) top weight, so strong enough for most peoples DSLR cameras plus long lenses, which to be fair is what you would need it for, that or heavy macro lenses. The tripod itself comes in at a tiny 290 grams or 10.2oz. its working height is between 13-23cm /5.1in-9in and when folded down comes in a an even tinyer 24cm /9.5in

So a good buy for little money and highly recommended.

HAMA TRIPOD STAR 61

Posted by Annette Johnson on June 18, 2019
Posted in: Accessories. Leave a comment

Here is my trusty and inexpensive Hama Tripod
Note the handy hook underneath that doubles up as a handy hook for say things like your  filters mini bag and you can also hang your camera bag on it of the ground is wet or to give the tripod extra stabilisation if it’s windy.

This one comes with a tilt and pan quick release head for the camera to attach to. ( A must for videographers and handy for us stills photographers.  It also has a useful wind up centre column for that extra little bit of reach and a handy grip for carrying it with. It also has a sometimes useful addition of a mini spirit level bubble to help you make sure your tripod is totally level before starting to use it.

I find the extended handle for the left to right panning for the tilt pan head excellent and smooth to operate, sadly the same cannot be said for the vertical and horizontal twisty turny  knob that Hama sadly cheapen out on.

Mine comes in a fetching Champagne colour and has the standard 1/4″ screw thread for the quick release and the tripod screw mount itself. Its height adjustable centre column is a geared affair which you wind with a crank handle, which is fairly smooth and quick and precise considering it’s price point. Working height is from 60 -153 cm or 23-60″ or 1.9 feet-5 feet. Weighing in at 1220 grams or 2.5 pounds or just over a kilo, its not bad on the weight compared to others I have looked at.  It’s aluminium structure creates a strong and sturdy support for cameras up to a maximum weight of 3kg , more than enough for most photographers and perfect for me!

Another worthy mention on it are its rubber feet permit a firm grip on a range of terrains, and they are ball and socket joint so so they will flatten to any gradients.

I particularly love the quick release leg extensions, no twisting to lock the extended legs into position,  just flick open the tab and it drops out and extends, then click back into position and its locked away!

Six years on and it’s still doing me well, and the price then was £18.99 on Amazon.co.uk  It’s heavy enough to be stable and light .

A fantastic piece of kit for the money, it even comes with its own travel case which it folds neatly into so that you can carry your tripod around with you safely with no hassle. Whether you are hiking up a hill, attending an important event or jetting off to your next holiday destination, you will always be fully prepared for any photographic eventuality thanks to the Star 61!

Canon LENS EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

I am been  re assessing my Lenses of late ; I have decided that I was going to sell three of my lenses, my 50mm 1.8,(sold now) my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 and my Sigma 70-300 macro.(sold now) I was hoping to get enough money to buy the Canon 55-250mm stm brand new! Lighter and better IQ than the sigma.

Then I will have my Tamron 10-24mm, my Canon 18-135mm, and the Canon 55-250mm, so down to three very useful lenses from five which are getting very heavy and I find that I hardly use two of them now (50mm and 17-50). This will lighten my bag and give the range and quality I am after as I cannot get any newer lenses for some time. Carrying five lenses around is getting a bit much as I am now getting older.

So how have I found the 55-250 IS STM and what prompted me to choose it over longer  (70-300mm) lenses.

As with all these things I researched as much as I could on the Internet. The Sigma (previously review) is and was a lovely lens but with no image stabilisation and a hefty weight this was going to necessitate a tripod everywhere I took it. Not always practical, right? so i was looking for something lighter with image stabilisation built in.

I heard so many not so good things about the Canon 70-300mm (budget lens) that I decided that I did not want to waste my money and time buying and then having it sell it. Alternatively I had read and watched many reviews on the Canon 55-250 IS STM, what caught my eyes and ears was the word “sharpness”. Now as you know this is important for photographers who don’t want blurry images and because of its super inbuilt Image Stabilisation, this not only ensures that whilst I press my camera button it eliminates al camera shake that happens. It also allows me to take images in poor light and allows me to use wider apertures.

So I searched the Amazon equivalent, here in Thailand (where I currently live) on the online store Lazada. Now here we are offered not just consumer boxed products for high street sale, but what they call “White box” products. I have noticed a very few available on Ebay in the UK. These items are exactly the same as there high street consumer wrapped boxes but at a discount.

So to the lens, I got it just before a ten day trip to Danang in Vietnam  and was very keen to try it out, I was not disappointed, yes its image stabilisation is fantastic, it’s smaller and ohhhh so much lighter than I expected. Yet it delivers beautifully crisp sharp images across the photo.  It snaps quickly and silently into focus once I mounted it on my Canon 70D lens.  It also is as utterly silent as my Canon 18-135mm STM lens, sometimes I had to check that it was moving when focussing on near and far objects. Super STM Stealth lens!

So I don’t think I am going to be parting with this superb lens for APSC cameras anytime soon. It is doing and ticking all my boxes for travel photography, and my project photography.

Arjuna’s Penance

During my four month trip in late 2015 to Southern India, I visited the state of Tamil Nadu, here in Mahabalipuram I saw many of the wonderful Monuments there. This one is affectionately known as Arjuna’s Penance, and competes with it’s other title of The Descent of the Ganges.

It is one of the magnificent monuments of Mahabalipuram. This wonderful bas air relief dates back to the mid-seventh century. Standing tall at a height of 43 feet, the monolith was carved on the face of two huge adjoining boulders, making its length around 96 feet.

The subject of the massive structure is either Arjuna’s Penance or the Descent of the Ganges, or possibly both. Historians and experts of archeology have never settled on one account as there are not sufficient sources or records.
