One of a kind- The Rock Fish Museum_Thailand

Posted by Annette Johnson on September 9, 2023
Posted in: Southern Thailand, Thailand South. Leave a comment

From my road trip in February 2023

Set up in 1992 by a fisherman, this museum houses stone carvings and sculptures of marine life found in Thailand. It is a must see for zoologists and marine life enthusiasts.

Stone Fish museum is the creation by Mr. Kitti Sinudom. It was inspired by his past career as a boat captain. He carved stone into different kinds of fish and categorized them in accordance with their habitat in the sea. Inside the Museum

The rock museum is located in Donsak subdistrict, Surat Thani province. Founded in 1990 by Mr Kitti Si-Udom. His hometown is Park Aow Village, Bang Tapoon. After he and his family moved to Surat Thani, he began carving stones in 1943 with the purpose of conservation of all species existing in the Gulf of Thailand; therefore, the future generations would have a chance to know these species.

These carved stones are supposed to be permanent artifacts for future generations and property of the country. Rock fish museum has been raised with skills and perseverance by carving stones into realistic fish, including many species in single and large group compositions.

Most of the carved stones are marble, limestone, feldspar, sandstone, any gypsum. Currently, there are approximately 3,00 pieces of carved fish and growing!

Banteay Torp Pagoda

Posted by Annette Johnson on September 9, 2023

Whilst visiting the Banteay Torp Temple in Banteay Chhmar district, right within the same complex is the very new looking Pagoda. Beautifully adorned with exquisite paintings I had to do a separate slideshow for this building in it’s own right.

Banteay Torp or ‘Fortress of the Army’-Banteay Chhmarr- Cambodia

Posted by Annette Johnson on September 9, 2023
Posted in: Kingdom of Cambodia. Leave a comment

Banteay Torp (pronounced Tor-op) Temple is a fascinating and interesting temple site. The name is thought to mean ‘Fortress of the Army’ and it was built during the same period as the Banteay Chhmar temple complex. It is believed to have been built as a tribute to the Khmer army for their defeat of the Cham army leading to Khmer control of the region. The temple is located about 12 km south of Banteay Chhmar.

The site basically consists of three large (and very precarious looking) stone towers. Also, you can visit the nearby pagoda with its beautiful wall paintings. The Soieries du Mekong Silk Center

Posted by Annette Johnson on September 9, 2023

During my stay in Banteay Chhmar in December 2022, we visited the Soieries Silk center and were shown how they make silk in Cambodia. Providing meaningful work for some local women in Banteay Chhmar, it was a very interesting visit.

The Soieries du Mekong Silk Center is a renowned organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the art of silk weaving in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Mekong region.

Silk weaving has a long and rich history in Southeast Asia, and the Mekong region is known for its high-quality silk production. The Soieries du Mekong Silk Center plays a crucial role in supporting local artisans and communities involved in silk weaving by providing training, resources, and a platform to showcase their products. Silk weaving is not only a traditional craft but also an important part of the cultural heritage of the Mekong region.

By supporting and promoting silk weaving, organizations like the Soieries du Mekong Silk Center contribute to the preservation of local traditions and the economic empowerment of communities involved in the silk industry.

Silk Center The silk center began as a collaboration of two NGOs – Enfants du Mekong and Espoir en Soie. Soieries du Mekong has been training young Cambodian women in the art of silk weaving since 2001. Today, about a hundred people are actively contributing to the creation of Soieries du Mékong’s collections: weavers, seamstresses, embroiderers, and dyers. All silk products are entirely handcrafted and reflect the talents of the local Khmer women. You can receive a tour of the silk center, observe the silk-making process and maybe even get invited to lend a hand and try to weave yourself.

Street Art Alor Setar

I recently visited Alor Setar in Malaysia and found some beautiful and unexpected street art around the city. Alor Setar, the capital city of Kedah in Malaysia, is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene.

While Alor Setar may not be as renowned for street art as some other cities, it does boast a few notable pieces that add color and creativity to its streets.

Here are a few examples of street art you can find in Alor Setar Remember that street art is dynamic, and new pieces may appear while others may change or be removed over time. These were seen and photographed in April 2023.

Rumah Merdeka -Malaysia

I had the pleasure of visiting this lovely, understated home when i visited Alor Setar in April 2023.

The house is now a museum to the first Prime minister of Malaysia. About Rumah Merdeka Merdeka means a lot to every Malaysian. The word was chanting out seven times, profoundly, by the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, at the ceremony of celebrating the independence day of Malaysia.

The House of Merdeka or Rumah Merdeka, indeed, is the house of the first prime minister of this land, Tunku Abdul Rahman. He is also known as Bapa Malaysia and Bapa Kemerdekaan.

The best option to see old Malay Mansion in fantastic condition. Tunku Abdul Rahman’s house was built on a piece of land that was previously owned by his mother, Che Menjalara, who subsequently bequeathed it to him. The Tunku originally built a wooden house here during the Japanese Occupation, in 1942, called it Rumah Jalan Baru. He rebuilt the lower portion of that house with bricks in 1953, but retained the wooden top part.

I hope you enjoy looking round it and its gardens as much as I did, very much a ‘get away from it all,” place..

Malaysia

Every time I return to Kuala Lumpur, I just have to visit the Petronas Towers, and walk in the beautiful park that sits in front of them.

But this video is not just the Petronas Towers, its also about my walk there from China Town and what I saw along the way.

A vibrant and architecturally diverse city the reminds me in many ways of London. A feast for the eyes, and the senses. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy visiting it!

Istana Sepachendera Alor Setar

Malaysia

During my visit to Alor Setar, or Alor Star as it is known locally, I was able to visit this sad and derelict Palace. No longer a school as per descriptor below, it remains in a sad state and only glimpses of bits of the front give you an idea how beautiful this building once was. I certainly enjoyed the walk round it and would love to see it restored.

Istana Sepachendera is a grand palace hidden within the grounds of a school. It’s often compared to the Taj Mahal due to its intriguing backstory. In 1882, the 26th Sultan of Kedah – whose administration spanned from 1881 to 1943 – built the residence as a declaration of love for his Thai wife, Che Sepachendera.

His devotion to her shines through the building’s stunning architecture, which blends together Malay and Thai influences. The royal couple gave birth to several royal princes in the palace too.

Sepachendera’s death in 1907 led the royal family to vacate the house. But it remained inhabited for years after by various parties. In 1922, it was home to the first English girls’ school in Kedah – Kampung Baru Girl’s School, established by Sepachendera’s son, Tuanku Ibrahim. During World War II, the palace was occupied by Japanese soldiers.

Following the war, the building became another all-girl’s school, but it closed in 1954.

The palace was last in use in 2000, when it functioned as a prayer hall for students and staff at the nearby Insaniah University College. There were talks in 2014 to preserve the palace and convert it into a museum.

Zahir Square Alor Setar

Malaysia

In April 2023, we once again returned to one of our favourite neighbouring countries, Malaysia. We have travelled extensively throughout Malaysia, but this time instead of flying in, we travelled by train and bus.

Our first stop was the wonderful city of Alor Setar, or Alor Star as the call it locally. The focal or center of Alor Setar is centered around Zahir Square and it’s amazing Mosque and historical buildings. You will see in this short slideshow the buildings of interest and in the square many people gather to break the fast, during Ramadan, which is after sunset.

It was a wonderful atmosphere, people sitting on picnic mats with little bags of food and drinks. The roller skates were there for people to hire and skate around if wanted. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Garden center #2 In Phuket

Posted by Annette Johnson on May 8, 2023
Posted in: Peaceful Moments, Phuket. Leave a comment

So, Garden centers in Thailand tend to be roadside affairs. Usually, a small holding with various plants and assortment of soils and trees for sale.

I have been driving about in my usual day seeing the astounding colours of these smaller roadside garden centers and decided to capture them in full bloom, here in Phuket.

In this slideshow you will see a more commercial Garden center, but still on the road, just both sides of the traffic lights. Majoring in plants, aggregate, sculptures, and all manner of pots! I only touched on a fraction of the plants on this visit. I may return later to see what else I can find. I hope you enjoy the show!
